Of course the first place that I'm going to recommend you look is http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Tourism-g294226-Bali-Vacations.html Next make sure you take the right amount of US Dollars to enter the country, then save the right amount of Indonesian Rupiah to be allowed out of the country! http://www.baliguide.com/visa_regulations.html I followed the advice to take British Pounds with me rather than exchanging in advance. I changed a small amount upon arriving Denpasar airport, knowing the exchange rate to be bad, saving the rest to change in resort for a better rate than I would have got back at home. Always worth checking out the local tourism page http://www.bali-tourism-board.com/ and also see what the weather might have in store for you http://www.weather.com/weather/monthly/IDXX0019 This is where we stayed http://www.santrian.com/griya/. A lovely hotel resort, right on the beach in a quiet town. But it was easy to hire a driver for the day or get a taxi around to other towns. Bluebird taxis operate around the island but if you have a number of things you want to see then it is a good idea to hire a driver, there are plenty of people offering along the streets. While your hotel will be able to arrange a driver, it is often better to seek out drivers just outside who may well be the ones your hotel would have rung anyway but this way the hotel doesn't take a cut of their earnings. Bartering is expected, and you will definitely hear that you'll be given a great "morning price". We were told that this was because an early sale was a good omen for the rest of the day. Whether this is true or not, I didn't see the harm in starting nearer half of this good offer and meeting somewhere in between. The guide books tell you to cover your legs up when going to certain locations, but unless sarongs were specifically offered at the entrance this didn't seem to be a problem. However, out of respect, I tended to cover up anyway. A note on the sun - you will sweat.... a lot. Make sure your sun-lotion has soaked in properly before venturing out and make sure you reapply during the day. Unfortunately for me it felt like it all sweated back off instantly and I got sunburnt several times over the trip even though I was diligently reapplying after every pool dip and throughout the day. We hired bicycles from the hotel one day which I think was a great way to get about and was certainly a bit of excitement. Most people get about on scooters but considering everyone's driving I was glad I was quietly pedalling along the road. Sadly we didn't quite get time/chance to go here but they look fun: |
